The Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 was introduced in 1931, the "Le Mans" was the "sports" version of the car and was first raced in 1931 and went on to win the 1931 24 Hours of Le Mans driven by Sir Henry Birkin & Earl Howe, and in 1932 driven by Chinetti & Sommer, in 1933 driven by Nuvolari & Sommer and yet again in 1934 driven by Chinetti & Etancelin.

The formation of Alfa Romeo

Alfa Romeo was founded as A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili) in June 1910 and began building racing cars in 1911. The "Romeo" was added to the brand name in 1921 following Nicola Romeo's appointment as company director in 1915 a result of him becoming the majority shareholder of the company.
