The 1935 24 Hours of Le Mans On the 15th and 16th of June 1935 John Hindmarsh and Luis Fontes drove their Lagonda to an outright win at Le Mons with an average spread of 77.85 mph, Dudley Benjafield and Roland Gunter drove their Lagonda to 13th position. It was not so much the maximum speed of the cars that won the race but more their ability to stay flat our virtually continuously for the whole 24 hours effortlessly without a single failure. Earl Howe in his Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 had the fastest lap of the race but failed to finish. OOPS! Controversially a mistake probably cost Alfa Romeo the race, it was announced very near the end of the race that the remaining Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 had now passed the leading Lagonda and the team hearing this instructed their driver not to take any risks and just stay ahead of the Lagonda, unfortunately the announcer was incorrect, he was in fact ahead of the 13th position Lagonda which was 26 laps behind, not the leading Lagonda which was actually further ahead on the very same lap! |
